What backflushing actually is
Backflushing is a cleaning routine that pushes water — and periodically a coffee detergent — backwardsthrough the group head to clear out the coffee oils and fine grounds that collect behind the shower screen over time. Normally water flows one way: down from the group, through the shower screen, through the coffee puck, and out of the portafilter into your cup. When you brew, that same route also leaves a residue of oil and fines on the parts the water passed on its way in — the underside of the screen, the group's internal chamber, and the valve that controls the whole thing. Backflushing reverses the flow to scrub those surfaces clean.
The trick that makes it possible is a blind basket— a portafilter basket with no holes in the bottom (sometimes called a blank or holeless basket, and often a plain rubber disc that sits in a normal basket). Lock it into the group and start the pump, and the water has nowhere to drain, so pressure builds inside the group. On the right machine, that pressure is then released backwards through the group and out through the machine's valve, carrying the loosened oils away with it. That last step — the release backwards — is the entire reason backflushing works, and it is also the reason it only works on some machines.
Why the 3-way valve makes it possible
The part that makes backflushing work is the 3-way solenoid valve. On a machine that has one, when a shot ends the valve opens a third path that dumps the pressurised water sitting above the puck out to the drip tray — which is exactly why these machines leave a dry puck rather than a wet one. During a backflush, that same valve is what lets the pressure built up against the blind basket vent backwards and carry the dissolved oils out of the machine. No 3-way valve, no escape route for the water, and nothing for the backflush to accomplish.
This is why backflushing is a feature of a specific kind of machine. Machines you can't backflush
Plenty of popular home machines cannotbe backflushed the same way, and it is not a fault — they simply are not built around a 3-way solenoid valve. Most thermoblock De'Longhi machines and the mainstream Breville lineup fall into this group. They leave a wet puck precisely because there is no valve to dump the water off it, and that same absence means there is no backwards path for a blind-basket flush to use. Locking a blind basket into one of these and running the pump does not clean the group; it just deadheads the pump against a closed basket, which at best does nothing and at worst puts needless strain on the pump.
So if you own a thermoblock De'Longhi or a Breville, do not go looking for a blind basket. This dissolves the built-up, darkened oils that a water flush alone leaves behind, and it is the version you do on a schedule rather than daily.

Backflushing is straightforward, but a few mistakes are common and worth heading off:
- Don't over-do the detergent.A little goes a long way — use the measure the detergent specifies, not a heaped scoop. Too much is harder to rinse out and can leave a residue that taints your next shots.
- Always rinse thoroughly. After a detergent backflush, run several water-only cycles and pull a throwaway shot before you make anything you intend to drink. Detergent residue tastes worse than the oils you just removed.

If your machine has no 3-way valve, it still needs the coffee side kept clean — you just do it by hand. Soak the portafilter and its basket in the same solution, rinse thoroughly, and dry.
