Why home machines buzz
The noise comes down to the kind of pump inside. It works by rapidly oscillating a small piston to push water through, and that rapid oscillation is, quite literally, a vibration. The buzz you hear is the pump doing exactly what it is built to do, amplified by everything it is touching.
This is not a sign of a cheap machine, either. Vibratory pumps are compact, reliable, cheap to make and easy to replace, which is precisely why they are standard in home machines from the entry level right up to serious enthusiast gear. The loudness is the trade you accept for that package. You can take some of the edge off — a rubber mat under the machine, or moving it off a resonant surface, dampens how much the countertop amplifies the buzz — but you cannot make a vibratory pump quiet, and you should not expect to. When the noise is a signal
Normal is a consistent buzz that comes and goes with the pump. The noises worth paying attention to are the ones that represent a change from that baseline, and there are broadly three of them.
