Espresso Machine Won't Turn On? Start Here

Start with the power supply
A machine that shows no life at all — no lights, no sound, nothing — points first at the power reaching it, not at the machine itself, and this is where most cases are quietly solved. Work through it in order, because each step is free and takes seconds.
- Try a different outlet.Plug the machine into a wall socket you know works — ideally test that socket with another appliance. Espresso machines draw a lot of current, and they can trip a breaker or a GFCI/RCD outlet, especially in a kitchen with a lot else running. A tripped breaker or a reset-needed GFCI is one of the most common causes of a "dead" machine, and it looks identical to a broken one.
- Check the plug and cable. Make sure the plug is fully home, look for damage along the cable, and if the plug has its own fuse (as UK plugs do), consider that. A loose or damaged connection gives you nothing at the machine.
- Skip the power strip. Plug straight into the wall rather than through a strip or extension, both to rule the strip out and because a high-draw machine is happier on its own circuit.
If the machine comes to life on a different, known-good outlet, the machine was never the problem — your original socket or breaker was.
The switch and the machine's state
It sounds obvious, but confirm the machine's own power switch is on and, on machines with one, that any main switch on the back or underside is also on. Some machines have more than one switch, or a switch that is easy to knock. On machines with a display, look for whether it lights at all — a dark display with power confirmed points more firmly at the machine than a machine that beeps or flickers, which may just be in an unexpected state (a cleaning cycle, a standby mode, an error). If there is any sign of life, check the manual for what that state means before assuming a fault.
The water tank interlock
Here is the one people miss most, and it is often the whole answer. Many espresso machines have a safety interlock that stops them running without water — a float or sensor in the tank — to protect the pump and heating element from running dry. If the water tank is empty, or (more commonly) if it was removed for a refill or a clean and not pushed fully back into place, the machine can refuse to power up or refuse to do anything, exactly as if it were dead.
So fill the tank and re-seat it firmly, making sure it clicks or sits all the way home so its sensor engages. This is especially worth checking if the machine "died" right after you refilled or washed the tank — that timing is the giveaway. It is a non-fault that mimics a serious one, and it costs nothing to rule out. The same interlock is a common reason a machine won't pump water, too.
A thermal cutout that tripped
Many machines have a thermal cutout (a thermal fuse or safety switch) that shuts the machine down if it overheats — for example if it was left on a long time, or run hard, or if scale made the heating element run hot. When it trips, the machine can go completely dead. Some thermal cutouts reset themselves once the machine cools; others are one-time fuses that need replacing.
The free thing to try: unplug the machine and leave it to cool for 30 minutes to an hour, then plug it back in and try again. If it comes back to life, a self-resetting thermal cutout had tripped, and the underlying cause — often scale making the element overheat, or simply being left on — is worth addressing so it doesn't recur. When it's a real fault
If you have tried a known-good outlet, confirmed the switches, seated the tank, and let a possible thermal cutout cool, and the machine is still completely dead, it is likely a genuine electrical fault — a blown thermal fuse that doesn't self-reset, a failed switch, a broken internal connection, or a dead power board or element. These are inside-the-machine repairs, and unless you are comfortable and qualified working on mains-powered appliances, they are not a DIY job: an espresso machine combines mains electricity with water, and opening one carries real risk.
At this point the sensible path is the manufacturer's support line if the machine is under warranty, or a qualified appliance-repair technician if it is not. Don't keep cycling the power hoping it recovers, and don't open a mains appliance you're not equipped to work on.
